During the early 1960s, Walton decided he wanted his company to gain higher sales volumes by selling items for lower prices than his competitors. By 1967, Walmart grew to 24 stores across Arkansas and reached $12.6 million in sales. And by 1968, the company opened its first stores outside of Arkansas in Missouri and Oklahoma.
In May of 1972, when Walmart's first stock split at a market price of $47, it had operations set up in fives states: Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas and Louisiana. In the following three years, the company expanded into Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and Texas, with 125 stores, 7,5000 employees and $340.3 million in sales.
As the decades passed, Walmart continued its expansion across the country while also making acquisitions of other companies. During that time, the company also opened its first Sam's Club store in 1983 and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1987. The following year, Walton stepped down as Walmart's Chief Executive Offer and announced David Glass would succeed him. The first Walmart Supercenter opened in the same year.
Walmart grew exponentially during the 1990s, as the company adopted and incorporated new ideas and technology. In 1990, Walmart sales in the United States had quadrupled to $32 billion from the previous five years. And in 1991, the company launched its Sam's American Choice brand of products. A year later, President Bush presented Sam Walton with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and Walton died months later.
By 1995, Walmart had 1,995 discount stores, 433 Sam's Clubs, 239 Supercenters, and 276 international stores with total sales at $93.6 billion and 675,000 associates. Walmart expanded into its final state, Vermont, in the same year.
Fast forward to more than 10 years later and Walmart introduced its new advertising slogan: "Save Money Live Better." The research found that American families saved an average of $2,500 per year by shopping at Walmart and that its reduced prices saved consumers more than $287 billion in 2006, or $957 per shopper.
In June 2011, Walmart acquired 51 percent of Massmart Holdings. The acquisition gave the company access to 13 African countries, including South Africa, Nigeria, and Zambia. The government officially approved the acquisition in early 2012.
